About Us

Tucked away down a leafy lane in the heart of the Forest of Bowland is Clough Bottom Farm - the home of Clough Bottom Trees & Shrubs. Our big trees nursery evolved following vital conservation work undertaken around the farm. In the early 1980s I began to use trees and shrubs as boundary markers to dissect the farm. These created visual breaks and provided wind shelter for stock while serving as nesting places and important wildlife corridors for pheasant, partridge, hedgehogs and the like. This hedgerow conservation work continued so I started introducing different species of trees for each year of planting, adding interest and variation. The natural progression was to set aside land dedicated specifically to planting trees to sell. Starting with Christmas trees, I moved onto growing numerous colours and varieties of ornamental trees and shrubs and business blossomed! Demand increased and now the nursery occupies 12 acres of organic farmland.

All our trees are grown as naturally as possble, with lots of care and nuturing. It's not a speedy process... it can take eight to 10 years before our trees are ready to sell, and in that time they inevitably become part of the landscape.

All of our trees are grown either in surface mounted airpots or root control bags. This makes transplantation that much easier, making our trees the perfect choice for home owners, garden designers and landscapers looking for big trees that make an instant impact. Whether it's a special, commemorative tree to mark a poignant family event, a natural gift that doesn't cost the earth, a specimen tree for a garden project or trees to provide effective screening, we have a massive range to choose from.

Buying from us is totally unlike buying from a 'traditional' garden centre or nursery. Our plantations sit within a picture-postcard setting, with geese and pheasants wandering around, and majestic views of Pendle Hill and the Trough of Bowland. The perfect landscape for you to appreciate the scale and elegance of our trees in the most natural of environments. And with over 100 different varieties and more than 5,000 specimens, you really will be spoilt for choice!

So have a look at our range, or better still, call Adam on 07763 748313 for an appointment to pop down and see them.

To make the most of your visit, we recommend you bring with you:

  • Sturdy footwear or wellies
  • Brolly, hat or hood for inclement weather conditions!
  • Digitial photos of the proposed planting positions, ideally with someone standing in the position for scale reference
  • Any drawings or plans you may have
  • Any pictures of trees or planting styles you like (from magazines etc)

Our heritage and values

We have decades of experience of growing trees for the trade and for the public. We selected a westerly-facing, sloping 4 acre site as the perfect location for nurturing the plants. We have good, light loam soil and lots of Lancashire rain to ensure we get healthy growth. We don't overly trim or manicure our trees - we prefer the natural, healthy mature look. You won't need to wait for the trees to bush out and 'look like they belong'. Conservation is a key goal for the farm. We follow an ethic of using limited chemicals and traditional methods with the ultimate aim of leaving the countryside in a better condition than we found it.
